Jack Berkley welcomed me into the firm on, July 6, 1981 with advice that has served me well. He said “Real estate isn’t a sales business, it’s a service business. If you try to sell houses, you’ll sell some. If you give good service, you’ll sell more and you’ll create lifelong relationships.”

I’m at the end of a long, rewarding career, all with Berkley & Veller Greenwood Country Realtors. My current role is as an advisor and real estate consultant. I offer advice and I match buyers and sellers with my trusted colleagues.

I’ve served my Realtor board as a director and as a chairman of the multiple listings, ethics and legal forms committees. I’m a Certified Residential Broker Manager (CRB) and E-Pro and completed courses in 1031 Tax-deferred Exchanges, contract law, energy efficiency and Conservation Easements. In 2004, my colleagues named me Realtor of the Year.
I see my role as an educator of real estate buyers and sellers. People need information and context to help make significant financial decisions. I help people understand their options. Buyers want to understand what their money will buy. Sellers want to receive fair value for their property. Everyone wants to be treated fairly.

Over the years my wife, Alison Macrae, and I have restored and sold two homes, purchased land and overseen the construction of our current home. I manage our timberland and managed our rental properties. I’ve developed knowledge of green design and building techniques, energy efficiency, historic preservation and sustainable land use. My collaboration with the Vermont Land Trust and participation on the Windham Regional Commission and Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund are natural extensions of my interests. My long time membership and service on the Brattleboro Food Coop Board of Directors is also a significant part of my commitment to a strong, sustainable, local economy.

In 1976, right out of college, I had the incredible good fortune to move to Vermont. I quickly made the conscious decision to spend my life here. My greatest satisfaction has been in playing an active role to help preserve Vermont’s working landscape, strengthen the local economy and participate in supporting our interesting and varied community. I love where I live and what I do. I’m a really lucky guy.
