In the northeast corner of Vermont’s Windham County is the very small town of Athens. With a population of only about 440 residents, Athens is one of the smallest towns in both the county and the state as whole. Centrally located between the somewhat larger communities of Grafton and Rockingham in Windham County and Walpole in New Hampshire, residing in Athens allows for an exceptionally quiet lifestyle while still having access to all that the area has to offer.
First chartered in the 1780s, Athens has the historic feel of other very small Vermont towns. A drive or stroll around the area will allow one a firsthand look at a classic New England landscape, replete with old stone walls from what were once livestock pastures, tree-lined winding roads, and quaint farmhouses from at least a century ago.
For any people inclined toward outdoor activities, Athens is a great spot for enjoying the outdoors at any time of year. With five great Vermont ski resorts located within an hour’s drive, the Connecticut River only 15 minutes to the east, and the many nearby swimming holes and hiking trails within or just outside the town’s limits, being bored is a rare occurrence for those living in the area. Whether you’re inclined to the high speed thrill of mountain biking and alpine skiing or simply prefer floating relaxingly along the river in summer, activities to suit any mood or lifestyle are all equally accessible in the area.
Athens’ location in Windham County is another great draw. Within 15 or 20 minutes are the towns of Rockingham, Walpole, Grafton, Windham, and Townshend. Such close proximity to these other lovely towns means you can always experience the great restaurants, museums, and shops in the somewhat larger towns in the area while still being able to return to a quiet and secluded feel upon coming back to Athens.
Towns like Athens are truly rarities in New England. It is a great treat to find a town of such small size that still maintains a very tightly knit community, is surrounded by a beautiful landscape, and is in a location with so much to do in the surrounding area.
