Wilmington is famous for its classic Vermont landscape of rolling hills. A trip up Hogback Mountain or to the adjacent Molly Stark State Park with its famous lookout tower atop Mount Olga will each lead to spectacular views of the surrounding area. Both the state park and Hogback Mountain Conservation area have miles of hiking trails in the summer and great opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and backcountry downhill skiing during the winter months.
Just to the west of downtown Wilmington is Lake Whitingham, one of the largest lakes within Vermont’s borders. The lake is not only a great spot for swimming and boating, but it is also a perfect location to see stunning fall foliage.
A visit to Wilmington’s downtown will lead to its many small and charming clothing stores, antique shops, art galleries, and wide variety of restaurants. Much of the downtown area of Wilmington consists of beautiful historic buildings that house these businesses.
Wilmington’s elementary school serves students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, and it maintains a fairly low teacher-to-student ratio of about 1 to 10. For students between 6th and 12th grade from Wilmington, most go to the nearby Twin Valley Middle and High School in Whitingham, which serves about 250 students from surrounding towns.
For the town’s roughly 1,900 residents as well as for the many visitors that come each year, Wilmington is everything you’d want in a small Vermont town. It has a tight-knit feel and close community, yet there is no shortage of places to shop, eat, bike, hike, or explore in and around the town.
